Today I scheduled myself to talk about how I am (or should be) saving money. It’s all part of my daily routine. You see I’ve made a simple editorial calendar for the next four weeks to teach me organizational skills and keep me on track. Unfortunately I got held up. So past week four it’s all on Saint Francis de Sales.
Unemployment and money. It’s not like I had a lot of money to begin with. It was no one’s fault but my own. Someone once asked me the most expensive thing I ever bought. He didn’t seem to think it was as funny as I did when I said, “my graduate degree.” I used to come up with not-so-secret fantasies about starting my own cult and collecting dues to pay off my student loans and credit card debt. But I think people are a bit little less likely to join since the whole Madoff did Wall Street. So not only do I get lessons learned from unemployment but I also get to teach myself fiscal responsibility. Yay!
As I celebrate my first week of unemployment I thought I’d share my ways to save money. As the weeks progress I’ll update them and add other ways I’ve been able to save. For now though here are my tips:
1. Tell people you’ve been laid off.
Like my previous post, it helps to tell people that you have been laid off. Not only do they feel bad and will offer their sympathy but you may be able to milk it for a free drink at the bar or a box of cereal. Like Mikey, “you will eat anything” when you’re unemployed.
2. Freecycle
People actually give things for free and it doesn’t involve broken glass, blood or jail time. It’s environmentally friendly and you don’t have to pay for it. Good for the soul and better for the unemployed.
3. Find things to do that are free.
I am always surprised at the amount of free things to do in a city that I inevitability miss due to sleep, work or purchasable outings. But since two of those factors are now gone. I’m totally about the free. I’ll be hitting up Google for all the free things I can schedule myself.
Right now my list is pretty short. I started this week at a level excellent for not spending extraneous amounts of money but I fell off the wagon last night and spent money that I should have spent on groceries. It’s all good, I’ll just find someone to buy me cereal and I can teach myself to like it.
