I have fallen so far off the saving money wagon that it’s not even funny. I mean it isn’t that funny to begin with and this counter productive behavior only seems to make it worse. Not like I need to prove that I really needed more groceries or anything else I spent money on this past weekend. It’s really my financial situation that I’m dealing with. But I know that I need to go back to the very beginning. A very good place to start if you ask me, and find constructive and smart ways to save money. Shutting myself in doors is not the answer nor is dancing in the street with my credit card in hand. Being intelligent and having a balance is the only way to remain sane, and happy, while being unemployed.
- Forget the bank card/credit card: Just because you go for a walk doesn’t mean you need to buy anything. It’s habit. So leave the plastic at home and enjoy a long and leisurely walk. If you see something you want, too bad. If it’s a necessity you can pick it up later. Being outside is gift in itself. For all those times you mocked transcendentalists, this is a time to reflect. What would Thoreau do?
- Stop talking about deferring your student loans and defer them: This is more an angry slap on the wrist to myself than a way to save money. But honestly, stop putting things off and do it. The Internet is a magical place where you never have to talk to anyone on the phone. Sign in and defer. It’s wondrous. Hear the angels? I do.
- Buy in bulk: Places like Whole Foods, Costco or your local super market have bulk bins. Be smart and look ahead. I’ve been eating a lot of rice lately. In hindsight I would have been smart to buy it in bulk. Bulk is cheaper and with dried items they last longer.
- Co-op it: There is a reason co-ops still get a following. Find other people like you and cook meals together. What a great way to meet new people and keep that cereal in its place, at breakfast time.
I would be very smart if I knew everything that I had previously learned in hindsight, but now I have it in my pocket for next time. I just need to make sure I take it out and use it before I wash my jeans.
