It’s not every day I can make a blog about lunching. I really like that word. It conjures up images of white gloves, tea, biscuits and society. Ok so I have issues with wanting to be Jackie O, let’s move past that. My lunch today was with a friend I had met previously at the Social Gaming Summit. She does work in green consulting and started her own vegan Web site.
The lunch was great because it was about sharing and catching up. Something I hadn’t done when I was working. You meet people, you network, you add them to Facebook and on LinkedIn. That’s all well and good but sitting down and fostering those relationships, that’s what is important. I got way to caught up in my day-to-day routine and would email here and there but I wasn’t invested enough. There is balance between work and day-to-day work. It’s those relationships that help bring in new business and keep you motivated about your industry. At least that’s the case for me.
Today we talked about technology. I love technology. I love talking about widgets, apps, digital distribution and engagement — call me wonky but just don’t call me Web 1.0. Talking with smart people about the industry you never know what ideas or innovations are going to spring up. It’s not about solving world hunger in one sitting, although give me enough water and some bread and who knows what can happen, but about dissecting the industry and seeing where the holes are. Where do I fit and what can I offer? Exciting stuff. I don’t know where I’ll be in the next few months but for now just remembering how to be human, and enjoying lunch on a sunny day while talking about technology is good enough for me.
Update unemployment benefits: I spoke too soon. My unemployment check came today. See? I really need to learn patience that or the nature fairies really have it out for me. Either way, it’ll be good to pay rent. I don’t think my cats are to solid at finding which berries are safe to eat in Golden Gate Park. No one wants a Rachel into the wild repeat.
