I’m learning to roll with whatever happens day-to-day. My schedule from the moment I woke up this morning has changed about three times so far. So I decided to make today Rachel get’s organized.
My first step was purchasing a monthly calendar. I know they aren’t exactly environmentally friendly but I am on a path towards organizational domination. It has been years since I’ve bought a calendar. Mostly due to the advances in cell phones and calendar applications but also to the rather unappealing choices that fill book stores. I never considered myself a fan of bunnies, Zen quotes or Cathy cartoons but I decided to look past that and see what I could find. I read somewhere that writing things down on paper and seeing them is a great motivational tool. And since I am spending so much time in my apartment these days it would be good to get a great visual for watching time pass.
So imagine my excitement when I saw the typographic calendar for sale at a local shop in my neighborhood. I love typeface and I love that I can hang it in my apartment and stare at it all day now. In hindsight, it might not have been the best calendar to keep me working but now I am motivated to hang it up and write my weekly schedule on it. Plus it doubles as my own personal unemployment time ticker. Now I can have the day, week and month down pat for when I finally get hold of someone at the unemployment benefits office.
My other purchase today was a notebook to begin organizing my job search. I’ll be tracking the jobs I’m applying for, as well as keeping notes of questions I’m asked on interviews (and other similar subject matter), and it will help me lay out a framework for the companies I want to work for. I’d like to take credit for this genius organizational method but it was a friend in the industry who sat me down and offered advice which I am extremely grateful for.
So now I have the objects to make my life organized and the method at which to keep me organized all I need to do now is start. Who knew Helvetica was so inspirational?
