My laptop has slowly been dying for the past year or so. I’ve tried new batteries, power cords and completely wiping the drive – well almost wiping the drive. I have really good music and I don’t wantto lose it. Not to mention all the photos I’ve taken over the past four years, so strike that last one.
I knew Oshima, named for the character in Kafka on the Shore, was going to die but I was pushing it. I bought it after college when I was working in Temple, Texas. My last computer, Sherman, met an early death by way of a glass of water. It was horrible. I still can’t look at the pictures or talk about it. Oshima was a way of light and entertainment. Have you ever lived in Temple, Texas? Let’s just say Oshima was a welcome friend the nights I didn’t go out two-stepping. From my move from Texas to graduate school and the endless hours of entertainment during my first few months in SF, Oshima was a tried-and-true inanimate object friend. It’s really going to be hard with out a laptop. Generational or not, I feel alone with out one, especially in a city like San Francisco where people carry their nerd card on their sleeve. With the contract work I’ll be doing, I’ll need to get a laptop. It’s just figuring out how to pay for it.
So now I’m not only debt-filled, jobless but I am soon-to-be the owner of a dead laptop. Insert montage of Rachel and her laptop here. I’m now looking for a new Mac. Partly because I love my old Apple laptop and partly… no really because Oshima was a great piece of computer. I keep hoping that one day I’ll wake up and find a computer at my door. Like the computer gods mysteriously will take pity on me and grant me a laptop. Until then I’ll have my memories and a box of Kleenex and a desktop computer. Who knew that a desktop computer would be my savior? Until the gods grant me a wish I’ll be trolling the Internet for laptop sales. Got any leads?
