Going back to the promise land

I like to read other people’s blogs about being unemployed. It’s semi-voyeuristic. Okay, it’s really voyeuristic. What better way to make yourself feel better than to read about other people struggling just like you. It’s my healthy reminder that I am not a special snowflake. It also works as my very own self-help group minus the end group hug, yay!

This morning I was reading Laid Off in NY and, through my blog self-help group, I discovered that I am too old to move home. Good news for me!

Disclaimer: This advice is only valid if you are under 25 years old.

Here’s why it’s a good idea to recharge at home while you’re unemployed:

1. Save money (duh). Everything is cheaper outside of NYC.
2. Eat free, delicious food all day, every day.
3. Sleep late and undisturbed.
4. Catch up with old friends who live at home.
5. Drive around wherever you want.
6. Watch a lot of tv and movies.
7. Go through your childhood bedroom and find cool stuff, like pogs.
8. Tackle a project you’ve been meaning to try, like building bunk beds (see below).

Laid Off in NY

Success! Strike that off my list of possibilities!

Full disclosure: my worst fear is moving back to Ohio. In hindsight I should have admitted that yesterday but I wasn’t ready. Some how admitting it makes it a possibility, but since it has now been written that it’s only viable for those under 25, I feel safe talking about it.

I love my parents but Ohio is not exactly the epicenter of video games or interactive media. Coupled with the fact that I haven’t live there for four or five years, and the job market there is significantly worse than California, it would due me no good to move. Also, when I do a get a job who will be as good a listener as the ocean as been? While we are in fact taking a break, I know it will be ready to listen to all my angst when I come back. Where else will I be able to get my pseudo-Gen X sunsets in order to contemplate life?

I made my decision the weekend I was laid of that I wasn’t leaving. As long as I could pay rent and find part-time work, San Francisco was stuck with me. It’s going to be hard but I have my cats, dried beans and I’ll be picking up boxes of cereal soon. All that’s left is conditioning myself to like eating cereal but that’s not so hard, right?

  • I really do love dried beans. I need to find a way to rehydrate them. I usually get to excited about eating them and never let them cook long enough.

Thank you for sharing about your friend. It's good to hear that work is easier to find. Finding sites that actually work and help people get jobs are always a bonus and worth sharing.

Sunsets in California are in league of their own. I can't believe I missed out them for so many years.

If this is the way the economy is headed where we are eating beans and cereal to save money...we might just lose our title as the nation of unhealthy fat people. I can imagine us all shriveling up during this recession.

On the brighter side part time work is easier to find these days. A friend just got laid off and picked up a few side jobs through the site YaaZe. She tells me shes making more now being a freelancer than she was when she had a stable full time job.

By the way I wouldn't leave California sunsets for Ohio either ;)

that was mostly a joke about not being able to go back home if you're over 25. but as a 23 year old, i think my time home is best limited to a week or two, for sanity's sake. love your blog!
  • I loved your post and I totally understand. Go home, relax and get some free stuff. I really enjoy reading your blog too!
