CYJ: customizing your job in a down market

I’ve been spending the better part of my morning deciding on whether or not my next pair of walk-around-the-city shoes will be Converse or Keds. It’s a big decision. Do I want high top Converse or slip-on Keds? Each have their own style and personality. I’ve always been more of a Converse kind of girl. I admit I snubbed Keds for the better part of my youth but something keeps drawing me back. So this morning I took to the Web to design my own shoes.  Early morning time sucker? Yes. But the ability to design your own Converse and Keds, and buy them? Awesome! Take that art on my fridge.

Sadly for all the time I’ve invested in designing the shoes, I probably won’t buy them. For one they are a bit more expensive than the in-store shoes. So much for Rachel’s brand of Converse and Keds. Two I haven’t come up with a killer must-have design. But I’ll keep coming back. I like the control and design elements of making my own shoes.

I’ll be starting some contract work today and some other contract work early next week. It’s not a full time job and I’ll be doing different kind of work for each place. It’s kinda of exciting. It’s my very own work buffet line! Walking past the sweets and meat only to pick up the salty goodness that I adore.I knew from my work experiences that I was missing some skills that I needed to push me to the next level. Either self-aware or through interviews, there are pieces and skills I am missing. So I am taking this opportunity to fill them. I didn’t want to jump right into another job without evaluating what I wanted next. I always thought that I knew what I wanted to do, but it never was quite right. Something didn’t quite fit.  So now I’m taking a step back to build. Besides if I can customize my own shoes, why can’t I customize my career?

Something tells me I really like yellow this season.

  • They are horrible to walk around in but I still do it. Although I can't find the ones I want in this city. I need to keep looking -- I haven't found any online either. Such is unemployment -- you keep looking and then fall off the wagon and buy a pair.

Note: Convies are really uncomfortable to walk long-distance in. So if you're looking for a shoe to walk all around the city in, I'd look elsewhere!
