Art in the time of cholera

What will we consider modern, recession art in the future?

What will we consider modern, recession art in the future?

I’ve been thinking a lot about people trying to rationalize the times, the recession, and my own current economic plight, as well as their own.

Typically, conversations cite instances of hardship breeding new forms of art — whether it be literature, painting, etc. It’s argued that these days will pave the way for radical contributions to society as a whole.

Where is this new art? Have you seen it? Realistically, is it making individuals money? Let me know.

I’m wondering if it’s based in YouTube mashups and video compilations from sites like Everything Is Terrible.

Many of these videos are based in nostalgia, but even remembering the 90s is totally “in” right now… I saw those shows on VH1 a couple of years ago. Yes, every decade is loved, especially when snap on bracelets and Lisa Frank stickers were involved.

I think it just takes us back to a time when the scariest thing going on were Monica-gate, where exactly Bill’s cigar was placed, and shoulder pads (which are also making a huge comeback).

It’s also gotten to the point where decades are just being completely combined into false realities. Just this morning, I had a friend blasting Diana Ross and The Supreme’s hit, “You Can’t Hurry Love.” As the song was playing, he said, “Man, I’m on such an ’80s kick. I love music from the ’80s!”

I guess both the 1980s and the year 1966 were happier times? They had that in common, right?

Furthering the nostalgia brand is Urban Outfitters. They are participating in something called The Impossible Project. The impossible: Bringing back Polaroid cameras.

Hey Urban, can you bring me full time, gainful employment back?

Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Do you think that the “new new” polaroid art will be people taking ridiculous photos of themselves, like they are now with their iPhones?

Just FYI, you can’t post polaroids to your Facebook or sext people, unless you use non-electronic mail delivery systems.

So again, where are you guys seeing new art? Is it just based in crazy mashup videos or can this new “Snuggie Sutra” site be included? I mean, it’s kind of like a modern day version of Keith Haring’s work.
"The Yes Ma'am" from Snuggie Sutra.
