1982: the days of cake and presents

Back in 1982 when the jobless claims rate was at an all time high, I wasn’t old enough to work. I was about to turn one in a month and one would assume I was more preoccupied with the idea of cake and presents than the recession.Lucky for me it’s February and my birthday is a long ways away. I can devote my thoughts to the current recession, my unemployment, and now the 26-year high jobless claim rate. Yay, trifecta!

The number of initial jobless claims jumped to a much-higher-than-expected 626,000 in the week ended Jan, 31, according to the Labor Department. That’s up from a revised 591,000 in the previous week and the highest level since the last week of October 1982, when jobless claims reached 637,000.CNN Money

Earlier this week I received my first weekly unemployment claim form. I’ll be sending it back tomorrow. Hopefully California can afford me. It’s not like I’m Scrooge McDuck or anything.
